In her first solo exhibition since 2001, Cecile Williams characteristically surprises with the intricacy of her making, the acuity of her narrative and the sensitivity of her perception.

Inspired by an Arabic message found in a clear plastic tube wishing an Indonesian fisherman a safe passage on the seas, Williams has combed Greta Beach on Christmas Island and amassed the plastic flotsam and jetsam washed up from the Indian Ocean.

Turning this array of poison bottles, toys and refuse into refined miniatures, she has constructed vignettes that both evoke and pay homage to the stories and histories of the Malay and Chinese people on this remote Australian territory.

The development of this project was supported by the Arts Development panel of Department of Culture and the Arts, and the Australia Council.
