VICTORIA VESNA AND JAMES GIMZEWSKI: NANOMANDALA

From renowned media artist Victoria Vesna and celebrated nanoscience pioneer James Gimzewski comes a powerful collaboration merging spiritual symbolism with science.

Nanomandala consists of a video projected onto a large sand platform reminiscent of a mandala, a circular diagram of great spiritual significance in Buddhist and Hindu cultures. Images cycle through from the complete sand mandala to the molecular structure of a single grain of sand and are complemented by a meditative soundscape by Anne Niemetz.

The work is inspired by the parallels of devotion and patience demonstrated by the nanoscientist purposefully arranging atoms and the Buddhist monk building complex images in sand grain by grain.

Nanomandala is in art in the age of nanotechnology, the inaugural program of IFAS (International Festival of Art & Science), presented with the generous support of Navitas and produced in association with Curtin University's recently opened Resource and Chemistry Precinct, the Nanotechnology Research Institute and Centre for Research into Art, Science & Humanity.
