PLAYMAKERS: RESONATING REVELRY

Music enthusiasts of all ilks are invited to a weekendlong celebration of craft and sound as talented local and international musicians and instrument makers take
part in presentations, workshops and an all-star concert.

The great ‘delta’ bluesman of the 1920s and 30s shared a common type of instrument, the resonator guitar. Bold, brash and loud, these instruments could cut through an orchestra or be clearly heard above the hustle and bustle of southern towns and juke joints.

Playmakers 2010 is devoted to the resonator guitar: how it works, how it produces sound and how innovative makers have taken the instrument in new directions.

A softer resonance is introduced by deftly crafted replicas of early classical guitars. Makers and players gather to discuss the unique approach to building these charming guitars as well as performing works from this important period of classical music.

Playmakers include: Grammy winner Lucky Oceans; Steve Evans, who makes resonator guitars for international artists such as Mark Knopfl er; Portico Quartet, playing their unique ‘Hang’; and American slide guitarist and songwriter Kristina Olsen.

As always, bring your ideas, your inspiration and – if you like – your instrument!
