BRONSON

SOMERVILLE EXCLUSIVE

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn • 92min • MA

Although based on a real person (Charlie Bronson, Britain's most notorious prisoner), Bronson is less a biopic than an explosion of style, with a stunning performance from Tom Hardy. Audacious, amusing and packed with dangerous punch, the film sees the fictional Bronson relating episodes from his life inside and outside prison in the guise of a frenzie sociopathic vaudevillian.

Tom Hardy absolutely steals the show as the elaborately moustached Bronson, prowling around like a hulking, brooding, unpredictable beast. It’s a jaw-dropping, high-octane performance set against a score of classical music and pop tunes as the director pays tribute to Kubrick and A Clockwork Orange.

SYDNEY FILM PRIZE FOR BEST FILM, SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL 2009

Bronson not only narrates his story to camera, he performs it, on a stage in front of an adoring audience – spotlit and painted to look like the scariest clown in the world. THE TIMES  MORE >
